Blue Grey cattle are renowned as unselective and extensive grazers, which makes them an ideal environmental grazer. Moreover, their relatively smaller and lighter frame means that they cause less damage to the ground through ‘poaching’ (making the ground muddy and adversely affecting the vegetation). More generally, the farming system associated with Blue Grey production typically utilises large tracts of poor but environmentally important hill/upland ground.

Blue Grey cows at the Morecambe Bay Conservation Grazing have attracted the interest of many visitors including Griff Rhys Jones, who compliments the breed in his book ‘Mountain’.
